I learned–and spoke–more Finnish in one weekly hour with Taru than I did in the 14-hour/week intensive class I took elsewhere. Not only did she get us all speaking, she somehow managed to make Finnish grammar comprehensible! The homework, along with her instructive emails, really reinforced the topics we covered during the zoom sessions, and the small class size ensured that we had ample opportunity to actually USE what we’d learned. Her patient and encouraging manner made me feel quite comfortable speaking my execrable Finnish 😂

She is by far one of the best language instructors I have ever encountered. I cannot recommend her class strongly enough. My only regret is not having found her earlier!

You want to learn Finnish, you are in the right place

This is my second class with Taru and have had the best experience ever, writing, conjugating and the pronunciation, have only been to Finland for 6 months and my boss and coworkers are very impressed with my progress thanks to Taru.
The lesson is just one hour and before you start, the teacher reviews your previous assignments together as a class and if you have a question she’s always there to help.
In between the lessons you will be grouped into small groups to practice on the speaking part also.

A Good Way to Learn Finnish

I have been fortunate to study three Finnish classes with Tara.
Her explanations of grammar points in both Finnish and
English are clear, and the homework that she assigns includes exercises from the textbook as well as games, listening to music and written assignments. Tara gives thoughtful and encouraging feedback for written assignments. With each class, I find that I am able to understand more written and oral Finnish. Finnish is a complicated language, but I think we are all gradually becoming more fluent when we speak in our small groups.

    I like the course

Maybe the best course that I have studied.
The length is 1 hour, and some may think that it’s short. But it’s actually quite reasonable for a busy person with family and you get more practice anyway with homeworks that require you to listen, read, think and research every topic you learn during the class carefully, so that’s a win-win situation.
Taru also has a good way to explain some of the difficut stuffs that you may have, so you get a good balance of understand and just need to remember something.
Taru also speaks Finnish in a very nice way to the learners. It’s not too fast, it’s not too slow. The phrases sound normal yet understandable. I notice a huge leap in my listening as long as the person doesn’t speak too fast.

    I’m improving

I am noticing real improvement in understanding and using Finnish. Looking forward to the summer course.
Taru gives a good balance of Finnish and English (when necessary) with good examples.

I like that the course is 1h per week which is suitable and manageable for those who work. Morning hour is also the best time of the day to learn language.
I like that homework is provided every week with a fair amount so I can practice what has been learnt.
I like how the teacher arranged materials in a nice visual manner which is good for learning.
I like the fact that English is used in critical explanations so grammar points are understood better, I myself got many points clarified during this course which had been confused to me for a long while.
However I would like the course more if the content is not too packed, sometimes there felt a rush to get many points covered with a limited timeline, for example interactions in break-out room sometimes were too short to cover all requested activities thoroughly. But this is a minor and does not compromise any thing per my opinion and experience.
Overall the course quality is good and I recommend Taru’s courses for those who consider to learn Finnish language in a just right pace with quality content.

Kiitos for your comment. I will add more time in group discussions and I will try to reduce topics to make the lessons less packed or rushed.
